How do you encourage others?

Encouragement can mean the world to someone. One kind word said while someone is feeling down and lacking motivation, can change their outlook on their day. And for the person that is providing the encouragement, the inspiration that is seen in the eyes of others is contagious.

Every Cent Counts Need of the Day!

Cathy and Brandon have two children. They struggle when it comes to raising their children. Recently the children have started acting out and are displaying signs of anger. Both parents acknowledge they need help learning how to properly parent their children, however they cannot afford the $150 it would take to attend the classes they so desperately need. They fall between the cracks when it comes to insurance coverage, as they make too much for Medicare and too little for Kid Care. Now they turn to you for help funding the classes they so desperately need, to help their children become responsible adults.

Bullying

Posted in Those that need help tagged , , , at 3:24 pm by Every Cent Counts

It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Source: National Education Association. If you don’t believe this is an issue keep in mind that suicide rates among 10 to 14-year-olds have grown more than 50 percent over the last three decades. (The American Association of Suicidology, AAS). Something has to change, before it is too late.

The biggest obstacle to overcoming bullying is awareness. Without a united front at school, at home, and in public areas we will not be able to curb this terrible behavior. It is a common assumption that the majority of children and teens that take their life were the victims of bullying. In fact, bullies are often the ones most likely to harm themselves.

There has been a correlation between a negative parent/child relationship and the likelihood that the child is a bully. This emphasizes a need for parenting skills classes to be taught. Many parents do not know how to discipline their children effectively, or provide adequate support to their children. This is especially common among parents of a young age.

Unfortunately if a parent doesn’t know how to discipline their child, when the school calls to inform them their child is having trouble at school, the behavior isn’t adequately corrected, and may increase the child’s frustration. This could lead to increased bullying and continue the cycle.

This single mother has recently started working part time as a server, making far less money. Jennifer is struggling to make ends meet and is enrolled in budgeting classes and case management at the Crisis Center. She has requested assistance to get school clothes for both of her daughters as the new school year is approaching, and they do not have clothes that adequately fit for school.

Every Cent Counts need of the week!

Henry’s apartment complex had a fire a few months ago. Henry was able to get out of his apartment, but he suffers from COPD, so he couldn’t go back and get his belongings. As a result he lost the majority of his personal belongings to the fire or theft. He has managed to replace the basic necessities on his own, but he still needs help.

He lost his clothes and slippers in the fire, and they are a large size; that are hard to come by through donations. He is in need of clothes, slippers. He would greatly appreciate any help you are able to give him.

It’s Not Just Bums, Children are Homeless Too!

Posted in Clients and Needs, statistics, Those that need help tagged , , , , at 3:05 pm by Every Cent Counts

According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, in 2009, there were about 50,000 homeless girls and boys across Florida, one of the highest rates in the country. Forty-two percent of those children were younger than six years old.

Homeless families often sleep in their cars, the streets, or at local aid agencies, such as Metropolitan Ministries, which houses 85 children in dorm-style quarters.

This illustrates one of the many reasons why it is important to help whenever you can. You could volunteer, donate, or just commit to one random act of kindness per month. Every little bit counts.

Every Cent Counts Need of the Week!

Jade is a rape survivor who is working extensively with Sexual Assault Services, at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. Jade suffered through a series of nearly a dozen rapes over the course of two decades. During that time she turned to food to try to numb the emotional pain of the PTSD and depression that followed each rape.

She developed bulimia and a compulsive eating disorder. In addition, over the years she gained and lost weight in unhealthy ways until gaining enough to currently be 350 pounds. Jade was just diagnosed with pre-diabetes and needs to enroll in a medical, nutritional, and exercise year-long program, to help save her life and improve her health.

Jade has sought help for her depression, which has become increasingly bad. This medical program will give Jade a chance to help her recover from her eating disorders, depression, and help her lose enough weight to finally be a healthy size for the first time in 20 years.

$100 will go towards a fitness program through the YMCA. $220.00 will go towards providing Jade with Holistic medical care.
