Bullying

It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Source: National Education Association. If you don’t believe this is an issue keep in mind that suicide rates among 10 to 14-year-olds have grown more than 50 percent over the last three decades. (The American Association of Suicidology, AAS). Something has to change, before it is too late.

The biggest obstacle to overcoming bullying is awareness. Without a united front at school, at home, and in public areas we will not be able to curb this terrible behavior. It is a common assumption that the majority of children and teens that take their life were the victims of bullying. In fact, bullies are often the ones most likely to harm themselves.

There has been a correlation between a negative parent/child relationship and the likelihood that the child is a bully. This emphasizes a need for parenting skills classes to be taught. Many parents do not know how to discipline their children effectively, or provide adequate support to their children. This is especially common among parents of a young age.

Unfortunately if a parent doesn’t know how to discipline their child, when the school calls to inform them their child is having trouble at school, the behavior isn’t adequately corrected, and may increase the child’s frustration. This could lead to increased bullying and continue the cycle.
